It then travels back to the source and will reflect off of it (at the driver's end).
Since the RS-485 driver is "made passive" (disconnected from the wires) when not transmitting, and the other end of the cable can then drive the network, a termination resistor should be added to both ends. With no driver connected, the differential voltage on the wires will depend on the termination resistor and biasing.
