Don't spray your entire lawn except you have weeds throughout.
Thatch is definitely made up of culms and crowns which have died naturally. Thatch will not be made up of mowed grass clippings, as is often believed. If the grass does not spring again a few seconds after you step on it, it needs water. You must water sufficient to soak 6 to eight inches (15 to 20 cm) deep, encouraging the roots to develop deep into the ground.
Soak for half-hour.
